NYFW: textures and silhouettes

DIANE-VON-FURSTENBERG-FALL-2012-RTW-PODIUM-005_runway

Just a few looks from the Diane von Furstenberg and Victoria Beckham Fall 2012 collections that I really liked so far. I’m getting a feeling that I’m very much a dress kind of girl. Well, you know, some girls are a trouser type and others are the ones who feel and look better in a dress or a skirt. Of course, I wear trousers and jeans, too, more it’s got more to do with the situation and comfort rather than love and it’s another story…

Love is life

diane von furstenberg-valen

Last night I went on-line to browse Diane von Furstenberg collections and pick a treat for my wish list. I do like DvF dresses very much. They don’t seem to age, neither themselves nor the wearer, and have a wonderful ability to conceal a few secrets and make you feel beautiful.

Diane also amazes me as a person who always finds time to think about people and the world around her and uses her influence to make a difference. This time it’s about sharing our love by donating 10% of all Valentine’s collection sales made though 14 February to the National Institute of Health.

The collection consists of three beautiful dresses in different shades of red including a classic wrap Jeanne dress, gorgeous slip-on Akari and figure-hugging versatile Takara, a perfume and a silk scarf. US fashionistas are also offered a very sweet and stylish ping-pong set, heart-embossed earphones, limited edition Cola bottles and a Love is Life t-shirt (which I’d love to have, but it’s not available here).

All pieces can be views and purchased via either UK, European or US website. If you’ve always wanted a Diane von Furstenberg dress, this could be a good place to start. Not only you will own a gorgeous designer pieces that you can wear day to night, but you will also become a part of a beautiful future.

Seaside Rendezvous… So adorable…

dianevonfurstenberg_dress_4

Borrowed the line from Queen’s song. Had to as it was so perfect… Summer day spent on a seaside dancing and melting in the sun, playing with the waves and totally releasing the inner child in me.

Wore DVF dress and Castaner wedges, which, shocked by the lack of weightlessness in me, sank into the rocky surface. The bag from Phase Eight that I bought about 8 years ago and recently found at the back of my wardrobe seemed to go nicely with the shoes and the La Redoute hat. Oh, yes, the sunglasses are from Topshop.

Weekend sign off

DIANE-VON-FURSTENBERG-SPRING-RTW-2011-AVRAM

I find it really curious to see which clothes from fashion collections get picked by fashion magazine editors and stylists. In a case of Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2011 collection, the Avram wrap dress in a gorgeous rich amethyst shade is a true gem that have already been caressing the curves of some of the most beautiful models on pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire and Elle. It’s just such a stunning piece!

Being Diane von Furstenberg

Diane_von_Furstenberg_DVF

According to Newsweek, she is “the most marketable female in fashion since Coco Chanel”. To me, Diane von Furstenberg is simply an extraordinary fascinating woman – beautiful, talented, strong, independent, sensual and life-loving.

A child of a Holocaust-survivor mother, she was born in Belgium in 1947, studied in England and then Switzerland where she met prince Egon von Furstenberg at the age of 18 and then married him in 1969, gave birth to two beautiful children, Alexandre and Tatiana, met Diana Vreeland, launched her business and made her first ever sale at the Gotham Hotel in April 1970, invented the wrap dress that became iconic, separated from her husband, bought Cloudwalk, her family home, on 31 December 1974 when she turned 27 as a birthday present to herself, added cosmetics, luggage and interior design lines to her business, made it to the front page of The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek in 1976, met President Ford, fell in love with Barry Diller who later became her husband, appeared on the cover of Interview, gave herself a 16-room apartment on Fifth Avenue as a present on her 30th birthday, discovered Gia who became a face of her cosmetics and perfume, revaluated her life having to deal with her mother’s breakdown, became somewhat distracted by her success and lost the track of her business empire, found her happiness and inspiration in Bali, sold her business, moved to Paris to be with Alain Elkann, an Italian writer, went through a painful discovery of his secret affairs, moved  back to America, wrote a interior design book called Beds, followed by The Bath (1994) and The Table (1996), started her business from scratch by developing a line of silk pieces, Silk Assets to be sold on QVC in November 1992 in just two hours, survived cancer and successfully re-launched her brand in 1997. The rest is history in the making and we are the lucky witnesses of it.

If you want to discover more, there’s a wonderful read called Diane: A Signature Life, an autobiography the designer wrote in 1998. These inspirational and very personal quotes are from the pages of this book.

“My mother always pushed me toward independence and freedom.”

“It took me a long time to realise that my childhood feelings of plainness and sometimes even ugliness actually gave  me an advantage. I felt I had to do things, to be intelligent and develop a personality in order to be seen as attractive.”

“All I had was an instinct that women wanted a fashion option besides hippie clothes, bell bottoms, and stiff pant-suits that hid their femininity.”

“Every store that had four walls and a ceiling was stocking the dresses like there is no tomorrow.”

“Though I acted very cool on the outside, inside I was a young, wide-eyed Belgian girl… Even more unsettling was the realisation that everyone knew who I was.”

“Marriage to any man for that matter was never a goal. I consider it a privilege to be able to support my lifestyle and my family myself.”

“I love love. Being in love was and is an essential part of living and breathing.”

“There has always been a side of me that likes to think that I would do anything for love.”

“Since 1980, it had become more important to me to be the faithful woman of a man than to be a businesswoman on her own with five phone lines.”

“My brush with cancer… gave me a new appreciation of life and health, though I’d thought I already had it.”

“Aging gracefully can be pleasurable.”

“We all do same things; what makes us different is how we do it.”

Outfit inspiration: Diane von Furstenberg

The idea of this outfit came from a picture of 20-year old Diane when she was studying in University of Geneva. It was the time when she got introduced to a jet set lifestyle where everyone was “effortlessly beautiful and rich”. The photo, the pose and the outfit, I felt, really reflected this classy and chic luxury. I found it very exciting to try and recreate the look by using modern pieces with a timeless feel to them. I decided to replace what looks like a jumpsuit with a dress because most women would probably find it easier to wear and introduced a tote bag and a pair of glamorous vintage style sunglasses to complete the look. I hope you like the result.

The Wrap

diane-von-furstenberg-1972

We say “the bag” – we think 2.55 or Birkin, we say “the scarf” – we think Hermes and when it comes to “the dress”, we think “the wrap”.

Created by Diane von Furstenberg, this dress is probably the most iconic piece in fashion clothing history because it never goes out of fashion helping women all over the world discover their feminine, confident, sexy, coquettish and beautiful side by simply slipping on a soft silky garment secured by a tightly wrapped sash belt.

DVF_fall2001DVF_Spring2002DVF_fall2002

Fall 2001, Spring 2002, Fall 2002

The idea of the wrap dress came to Diane after she saw Julie Nixon Eisenhower wearing a DVF wrap top and skirt on a television show. The outfit just wanted to be made into one piece easy-to-wear dress.

DVF_spring2004DVF_fall2003_1DVF_Fall2004

Spring 2004, Fall 2003, Fall 2004

The first dress in a wood grain print saw the world in 1973 – a few yards of fabric that would fit a female body as if the wrap was made just for her -  highlighting the bust, slimming down the waist, lifting up the bottom and allowing complete freedom of movement. The dress could be worn day to night. Slipping on in the morning within seconds allowed women to look gorgeous at work, but adding beautiful jewellery and heels would instantly turn the same piece into a seductive outfit suitable for a special occasion.

Every season a new set of patterns would emerge. Not only the colours were striking and unique, the patterns themselves were designed to compliment different women and their mood and unique personality. The inspiration came from Diane’s past in a form of a beautiful signature, scarf pattern, post card stamps, graphic images or nature. The animal prints made their debut in the fall of 1974. They became so popular that Diane’s driver would count them walking down the streets, from prep schools to office buildings to glamorous restaurants.

Fall 2009, Fall  2010, Spring 2010

Every dress carried a bit of designer’s soul in it and this is one of the reasons why it was such a fascinating piece to own. When something is made with so much love, thought and care, it’s impossible not to feel special in it.

DVF_spring2004_1DVF_Spring2005DVF_Spring2006

The wrap stole hearts of millions of women all over America and then – the world. It was associated with the most wonderful memories and special moments. Todays wrap is essentially the same dress that comes in luxurious jersey silks rather than original basic cotton fabrics. Its shorter length is perfect to show off just the right amount of leg and a modern collar is smaller to make it look fresh rather than vintage.

DVF_Spring2007DVF_Resort2011_2DVF_Spring2011

Spring 2007, Resort 2011, Spring 2011

It’s a timeless piece for a woman who wants to feel like a woman because once you put on the wrap, there will be no way back to unisex. The dress doesn’t only transform the way you look – it definitely changes the way you feel and act, too.

Find the perfect wrap dress and fall in love with yourself.

Natalia Vodianova in Diane von Furstenberg campaign

natalia-vodianova-diane-von-furstenberg-campaign-spring2008-5

Back in 2007 Diane von Furstenberg decided that it was the time to use a model rather then herself for an upcoming campaign and turned to her friend of three decades, François-Marie Barnier, the artist and photographer behind these unique creations, for help. She also choose Natalia Vodianova to be the model and pose for an intimate story photographed in both New York and Paris. There was no make-up artist or a stylist – Natalia chose all the clothes herself and posed bare-faced.

The result is a true art form where 50 photographs transform into paintings filled with a colourful rainbow of emotions. Here are some of my favourite images from the campaign and you can see more in Barnier’s book, Vive la Vie.

I’ve also included a behind the scenes video for an extra dose of fashion magic.
