The spirit of the city

reiss-fall-winter-2012-2013

There would not be a better moment to introduce Reiss Autumn 2012 collection than London fashion week. Not only because it’s a British brand, but also (and this is a very important “also”) because the collection called “The spirit of the city” was inspired by London, with its unique blend of luxurious heritage and modern creative spirit.

reiss-indareiss-priestly

From the artistic and romantic affair of woodland influences to the strength and power of Forties icons, to sexy, minimalist Nineties styling and playful pyjama dressing, the season is all about bringing back the glamour to be enjoyed by any woman who isn’t afraid to experiment and knows exactly what she wants.

reiss-adi-dressreiss-henrietta-isabella

You can play with textures and silhouettes by going for volume, clean lines or highlighting the waist, truly indulge in a very autumnal colour palette full of soft and ethereal shades, icy blues and blush pinks and vibrant jolts of emerald, fuchsia and reds and then finish the look with beautiful accessories made of smooth leather.

reiss-fifireiss-duffy

With the incredible attention to details and perfect tailoring, the collection looks as if it came straight from the catwalk, so it’s hard to believe (and yet it’s true) that everything is available in your nearest Reiss shop or on-line.

Autumn transition pieces: white sweater

vogue-paris-november-2011-magdalena-frackowiak

Transition pieces. They are like best friends and comforts blankets all-in-ones. Reliable wardrobe companions that take you from one season to another in style and comfort.

Take the white cable-knit sweater. It’s not just a classic piece -  this life-saver goes with practically anything. You can wear it with jeans and Converses, then swap the trainers for kitten heels and jeans – for cigarette trousers for a smarter look.

L Officiel singapore march2012-6

Or wear your softy with a skirt creating at least three different outfits – wave “Good bye” to summer by pairing the sweater with a long silk floaty skirt or palazzo trousers, combine with a pencil skirt and classic pumps for work, leather or full skirt and booties for a coffee date. Once those options are tried and tested, practice the all-white trend that will be one of the hits in Autumn/Winter 2012/13 or cocoon in wide wool trousers, oversized coat and an optional chunky scarf.

Gennarino by Moschino

gennarino-moschino-bear-iphone-case

His name is Gennarino and he (I am failing to call him “it”) is a little Teddy Bear iphone case made by Moschino to celebrate the Fashion Night Out.

The sweetest Moschino mascot priced at around £50 will be available from September 2012 in all Moschino boutiques worldwide. Fashionistas will have a choice of three colour combinations – the beige with a red ribbon, yellow with a blue ribbon and pink with a green ribbon.

Isn’t he just adorable? My inner child is begging for one and I may just have to give in.

Bags: building a perfect collection

glamour-uk-march2012

Recently I have developed a liking for a shoulder bag and its tempting design – a slinky polished tan leather body with a touch of walnut and black, a sensual movement of a gold coloured chain and an overall fancy appearance. It’s medium, but roomy. I can carry it on my shoulder or turn into an envelope-shaped clutch. I am pretty positive I need this bag. It’s beautiful and different from the ones I have.

While marinating an idea of a possible purchase I got thinking about my other bags and the way the collection was acquired over the years. What was the driving force behind those buys? Love? Need? Practical thinking?

I have never been a bag lady – it’s the shoes, books and lingerie for me. I am pretty good with resisting the bags until the right one comes along and it doesn’t happen that often. However, whilst I believe that you can’t have enough shoes, I feel that there should be a set number for the bags because a good bag can compliment a few pairs of footwear.

But really, how many bags make a perfect collection? Have you ever thought of that yourself?

For starters, any girl needs a good roomy tote or shopper, best in classic brown/tan or black. Tote allows us to carry our life around, shop in style, house a laptop or anything equal or larger than A4. Incredibly useful. I got mine, a tan coloured Jet Set Michael Kors tote, a year or so ago and me and Peanut (named mine after its official shade) have been pretty much unseparatable since.

Of course, before Peanut, there were B and Ledbury. The hand-helders (but also from the Tote family). I could have done with one, but the girls were bought in different time periods when the soul desired and budget allowed.

The Fendi B was a dream bag. I saw it on a runway and felt a tight squeeze in my heart. It was a perfect summer city bag for me – the canvas and tan brown leather with a very distinctive look, both adorable and chic. I didn’t buy it straight away – the price was way too high for me and I didn’t want to join masses and masses of celebrities who carried it (really don’t do that whole celebrity thing…) A year later as the hype faded and seasons changed, the B was mine. Its fabric curves make it a bit of a high maintenance, but dreams are allowed to be.

And the Ledbury is my cuddly pet. I really can’t explain it, but touching that Mulberry leather is kind of therapeutic. Ledbury is my comfort blanket. She also made friends with a few pairs of shoes I had, they look really good together. Just like Peanut, Ledbury is a all year rounder with an anti-aging attitude.

I do think that having a hand-held bag is a good idea. Particularly if you fancy doing a bit of lady-like chic (think Louis Vuitton RTW Fall 2010). Again I’d go with tan or black, but for creative types anything colour-blocking is worth considering, particularly as they are very much in style right now and the choice is huge.

Having said that, if I could turn back time, I’d rather have a Bayswater instead of the above trio. If you are looking for the most practical solution and a bag that will last you for years and years to come without losing its classy appearance, Bayswater is brilliant – it still has the roominess of a tote, can be hand-held or worn on a shoulder and it’s just such a beautiful thing to have, especially in tan.

Another essential is a small clutch or shoulder bag that you can wear across the body during a day or take out at night. It took me a while to find something to fill the gap. Missoni did the trick. Chanel 2.55 or Le Boy 2.55, in particular, would be a dream come true (not happening any time soon, though).

For those loving a touch of minimalism, Celine (and who wouldn’t think Celine), Chloe (Louise or Jade) or Victoria Beckham are brilliant choices for any leather strap styles.

If your lifestyle require your presence at frequent fancy events, then I’d definitely suggest a separate box clutch (McQueen, Bottega Veneta or DvF) for those occasions.

And, of course, a raffia tote or basket for those summer walks through a sun-kissed town to the beach for years to come. Even if you think you don’t need one, there will be time when that very bag will seem like the most obvious and best choice to finish an outfit and carry your daily essentials around. In style. I often think that a good straw bag is not only great in its own rights, but can easily replace any white leather bag that we often see as a summer essential. I have the white leather, but now I wish I had the raffia instead.

Here we have it. Five essential bags (shopper, tote, clutch, shoulder bag, raffia/straw tote). Plus an indulgent item. Because no matter how practical we are trying to be, the fashion is about a little fan, too. And my recent find, the bag that inspired this entire post, is going to be that element of fan for me. Should I choose to buy it, I will certainly introduce you to each other. Promise.

As a P.S. I would like to add that buying a very expensive designer bag isn’t essential in order to be stylish. Use examples above, but look around. High street, especially Mango, Karen Millen (check their clutches and shoulder bags – AMAZING!), Reiss and Whistles produce amazing collections each season, while Monnier Freres offers a few stylish, but affordable designs by some of the “it” names including Phillip Lim, Sonia Rykiel, Furla, Vanessa Bruno, Marc by Marc Jacobs, DvF, Jil Sander, Michael by Michael Kors and more.

Treasures

bauble bar soleil dkny jewe

Like a kid in a sweetshop I was seriously excited to find all these “jewels on a budget”. Ok, some aren’t that inexpensive, but most of this gorgeousness really is affordable! My first stop was the vintage Lanvin look-alike necklace that I’ve already mentioned on my Secret Page, but the more I looked the more beautiful pieces I discovered. The Soleil collection is my absolute favourite, especially the cuff and the poppy statement ring. I’ve added half a store to my CurrentlyObsessed list and will definitely treat myself to a trinket or two soon. Below are just some of the pieces I adore. If you fancy a bit of browsing, visit baublebar and have fun shopping.

Zara necklaces

Love these necklaces so much. Such a perfect final touch to a daily outfit. Hope I won’t miss the moment when they become available. Still trying to decide which one to go for – the all-pastel option or a touch of emerald as it would definitely compliment the ever-changing colour of my eyes.

Summer elegance from DAKS

daks spring2012 campaign

I wanted to write about Daks Spring 2012 collection ever since I saw it, but talking summer and seaside during cold rainy months felt a bit wrong. It seems that the waiting game isn’t going to be in my favour because the stubborn rain keeps coming back (oh, the unpredictable island-based live we live!), so it’s a now or never time for dreaming of nautical elegance, summer glamour, carefree chic and a few investment pieces.

When compared to many other Spring/Summer 2012 collection out there, Daks didn’t exactly jump out or get crowds talking about it. But then Daks isn’t meant to be worn by crowds but rather women who crave timeless beauty and want to look quietly expensive and comfortable at the same time.

I’ve been in love with their dresses, shirts and long skirts for months now. I can easily picture myself wearing them all the time for years and years, with flat sandals or wedges and a straw bag or leather tote during a day and gladiators and an i-can-fit-in-a-palm-of-your-hand clutch for the evening. Plus a pair of sunglasses and an optional hat.

What do you think?

Stripes

elle_us_june2007

What is it about stripes that make them so attractive and addictive? How can a thin line be the shortest and straight way to elegance and chic whatever the budget? Coco was such a genius when she introduced the world to a Breton top. I wonder if we would ever notice it without her impact on our taste…

My favourite choices are always navy and blue stripes because those are the colours I adore and wear a lot. Adding them to solid pieces, a pair of denim blue jeans, white or blue dress or a white summer skirt or trousers,  make the outfit feel so flirty, classy and very current. My other little rules are…

* never wearing more than one stripy piece at a time, whether it is a top or pair of shoes

* wearing horizontal lines on top and vertical on the bottom

* being very selective when it comes to the length of my tops as a shorter one can definitely square you out

* spending a bit more on timeless items like cashmere jumper, classic shirt or cardi that I will wear for years and years and less on tops and tees that will be worn day in and day out, washed a lot and most likely lose their pristine appearance within a couple of seasons

* playing with stripy accessories for just a touch of fun and definitely choosing budget-friendly options when it comes to jewellery, sunglasses, hats and bags (sometimes this even applies to shoes as long as they are adorable and comfortable – no.15 below is a perfect example)

* adding a gold piece of jewellery or statement necklace (pearls or crystals or both) to a basic outfit for creating a different mood.

Sometimes dream dresses are real

tibi ruffled crepe de chine dress white

I have found THE ONE. I knew it straight away for my heart agreed with my mind, which isn’t something they do on a regular basis. I saw the silk, the pleating and tiny buttons and felt sweet firework sensation of busting endorphins. I’ve dreamed this design for ages and never thought one day the image will materialise into the real thing. Sometimes dreams do come true – a wonderful simplicity of life that I always find so exciting. Needless to say, I cannot wait to receive it and wear on my birthday in a couple of weeks.

Missoni for Converse

missoni-converse-chuck-taylor-spring-summer-2012-1

I admit, it took me a while to get my first pair of Converse, but once me and my new trainers had a walk I was converted. Needless to say, I was excited to hear that Converse teamed up with Missoni for the fifth time to give an iconic zigzag look to Chuck Taylors, one of the Converse legends. The green and cream (officially known as tan) shoes in woven fabric that sparkles thank to silver and gold metallic threads are designed specifically for women. The boys can treat themselves to a navy pair.  I am loving the tan version that would look perfect with jeans or wide off-white linen trousers and also fit a pastel trend brief seamlessly. What do you think?

Outfit inspiration: Milan fashion week

milan fashion week dolce gabbana

Outfit number 3 to celebrate one of my favourite fashion weeks. I know I am a day late as Milan fashion week officially started yesterday, but I am a creature of habits and Wednesday is a Stylish quote day, so the outfit had to wait.

On the other hand they say best things happen to those who wait, so I really hope that you will like my Milan-inspired look.

It all began with an Etro jacket that had amazing details and I wanted the outfit to reflect some of the most beautiful elements of the garment.

I picked the light blue dress because Italians are very much about femininity and sensuality and a combination of powdery colour, silk, elegant ruched details of the back (you can see it if you follow the link below) and delicate pattern of the skirt were absolutely perfect. Then I thought of the shoe option and my mind went back to this very Dolce&Gabbana pair made of macramé lace – sort of the same pattern as the front panels of the coat.

The rest was easy. A statement ring for a bit of diamond sparkle and beautiful Murano glass necklace, delicate enough not to overpower the dress, but to add the tiny accents with the ice-like beads circled in gold and tangerine strokes of melted glass.

And of course, a bag that’s big enough to carry all the necessities, but beautifully shaped and compact, and a pair of sunglasses for you cannot be in Milan and not wear any.

Love is life

diane von furstenberg-valen

Last night I went on-line to browse Diane von Furstenberg collections and pick a treat for my wish list. I do like DvF dresses very much. They don’t seem to age, neither themselves nor the wearer, and have a wonderful ability to conceal a few secrets and make you feel beautiful.

Diane also amazes me as a person who always finds time to think about people and the world around her and uses her influence to make a difference. This time it’s about sharing our love by donating 10% of all Valentine’s collection sales made though 14 February to the National Institute of Health.

Diane-von-Furstenberg-dresses

The collection consists of three beautiful dresses in different shades of red including a classic wrap Jeanne dress, gorgeous slip-on Akari and figure-hugging versatile Takara, a perfume and a silk scarf. US fashionistas are also offered a very sweet and stylish ping-pong set, heart-embossed earphones, limited edition Cola bottles and a Love is Life t-shirt (which I’d love to have, but it’s not available here).

All pieces can be views and purchased via either UK, European or US website. If you’ve always wanted a Diane von Furstenberg dress, this could be a good place to start. Not only you will own a gorgeous designer pieces that you can wear day to night, but you will also become a part of a beautiful future.
