“I'm just trying to make some people who are looking for something particular happy.”
Tomas Maier
Tomas Maier was born in 1958 in Pforzheim, Germany, on the age of the Black Forest in a family of architects. After graduating from a Waldorf school, he moved to Paris where he trained at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture and freelanced for some of the most prestigious fashion houses of France, Italy and Germany including Guy Laroche, Sonia Rykiel, Revillon and Hermès. In 1997 he also launched his own clothing label selling his collections in over 30 countries.
When Tomas Maier joined Bottega Veneta in 2001 as the brand’s new creative director, he knew what he was signing up for. The designer with his almost palpate desire for perfection and simplicity (he even removed “h” from his name in order to achieve visual symmetry) was a perfect choice for Bottega that was in desperate need of revival.
He gave the brand a future built on four core values: fine-quality materials, extraordinary craftsmanship, contemporary functionality, and timeless design. “A certain nothingness” is what he calls it. As a result we admire flawlessly perfect clothes that are beautiful lines wrapped around the body – not just fabrics, zips and buttons, and limited edition intrecciato bags that don’t require stitches and made entirely by hand by artisans some of whom have been working in the factory for more than 40 years.
Tomas Maier isn’t there to shock the fashion world. His goal is creating an impeccably constructed casual low-key luxury that may well be discreet to an outsider, but will definitely make you feel blissfully special once you get to experience it.
